It has recently been reported in the "Tavy Times" that Tavistock is to be graced with yet another "Charity Shop". This replaces one of the few real shops we have in Tavistock, ie selling goods that people actually need. We have so many Charity shops that Tavistock is resembling a run down Northern mill town, full of charity shops, estate agents and mobile phone shops.
Tavistock Town Council believes that Tavistock is a haven of specialist shops, and makes much of this in its publicity. The reality is that we do have a small number of good (if not excellent) specialist shops, but we are lacking in any number of areas. For example, since "Bill the Baker" quit Tavistock, there are no bakers offering a range of high quality breads and cakes. Those that are left are of poor quality and offer little real choice.
I have no real gripes against the charity supported by this shop, just the large number we have in Tavistock.
I guess one good thing to come out of the preponderance of Charity shops is that it gives old ladies somewhere else to go (or work) instead of filling up the "Old People's Rest Room"
